I had the absolute pleasure of spending the day with Maurice Fitzgerald of Far East Photography Tours. It was the day after a snowstorm, there was a fresh dusting of snow, and the city looked beautiful. A Far East Photography Tour allows you to see St. John’s and surrounding areas through the lens of your camera! A tour will take you to the most see historic sites and landmarks in and around the capital.

Your tour guide will be Maurice Fitzgerald, a local professional with more than 20 years experience. Maurice will help you capture striking images and show you unique perspectives you won’t see on a typical sightseeing tour. I asked Maurice to take me to some of his favourite places to shoot so we could give you a photographer’s lens view of our beautiful city!

First thing on the agenda – Jellybean Row. Maurice takes a lot of his clients to Gower Street and the surrounding area to shoot the incredible architecture. He says it’s easy to get lost and spend an entire day shooting the nooks and crannies in downtown St. John’s!

The great thing about Maurice’s tours is that you don’t have to be a professional photographer - whether you’re a beginner with a ‘point and shoot’ or an advanced amateur with a DSLR, you’ll be heading home with an album full of stunning photography that you took yourself!

Next up, I wanted to be taken somewhere a little off the beaten track – The Outer Battery.

Maurice does private 2 and 4 hour tours for 1-3 people so you really get that one on one experience with a professional, experienced photographer.

As the snow started to fall, we decided to get in one last iconic stop – Signal Hill National Historic Site. We got there just in time to catch a beautiful burst of sunlight coming through the clouds and onto the ocean. When asked about shooting in the winter Maurice says that a lot of people can be intimidated by shooting on overcast or snowy days, but those conditions can produce some of the most beautiful photography. Foggy days are also perfect for shooting in black and white. As you can see from the video, the snow was really starting to come down, but I managed to snap a gorgeous shot of a little boat cruising out through the Narrows!

Overcast days make for beautiful photographs!

Maurice runs his tours any day of the week and any time of year. These photos really demonstrate the variety of photography you could achieve during any given season.
