Sizing up Newfoundland & Labrador

This is the time of year when people dream of travel, plan their vacations, book stays and transportation. When talking with our wonderful first-time visitors, one particular subject often comes up — the scale of our province. Yes, Newfoundland & Labrador is awesome in many ways, including size.

Sizing up Newfoundland & Labrador

The island of Newfoundland has a coastline of 9,656 km and an area 111,390 sq. km of making it the 16th largest island in the world — and we haven’t even mentioned Labrador yet, which we call “The Big Land”. The NL Tourism website provides a handy distance calculator.

Numbers are great for detailed planning but aren’t the most useful means of conveying scale, instead visually comparing our province to parts of the world you already know is easier, and more fun.

Below, we have placed a blue outline of Newfoundland & Labrador “across the pond” at the same latitude for comparison with Ireland, the United Kingdom, and mainland Europe. Are we larger than you thought? Yes, Newfoundland & Labrador is “a little smaller than California, slightly bigger than Japan, and twice the size of the entire United Kingdom”.

By the way, did you notice that our capital city St. John’s lies on the same latitude as Paris, France? In fact, St. John’s has the third most temperate climate of all cities in Canada, following only Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia.

Below, we have moved the blue outline down the eastern seaboard of the United States for easy comparison there.

With a provincial population of only 532,000, speaking roughly 26 English dialects, you can not only find a vibrant metropolitan city in St. John’s but also the serene solitude found in nature along the coast or inland in any direction.

But don’t let the size fool you — NL itineraries can be as short or as long as you wish. The NL Tourism website is packed with plans to help you get out and explore, check it out!

So when planning your visit, plan for beauty, fun and adventure over distance with varied terrain, experience, weather and accents!
