Christmas in the St. John’s region is festive and homegrown, with traditions that bring the whole community out into the cold. Here’s how to spend the season.

For many locals, the holiday season starts in October. Christmas at the Glacier in Mount Pearl is one of the largest craft and art festivals in the province, bringing together close to 200 craft producers and artists for five days of shopping from October 21 to 25. Bring your list and check it twice.
As December nears, the St. John’s Farmers’ Market on Freshwater Road fills with handmade gifts, baked goods, and locally made treats. Its annual Festive Market is a holiday showcase of local food and artisans, with stocking stuffers for everyone on your list.

The Downtown St. John’s Christmas Parade kicks off the season each year. Floats from local businesses and community groups wind through the historic downtown, with Santa in tow. Grab a spot along the route, bring your hot chocolate, and don’t forget your mittens.

At Bowring Park, the trees and paths around the Duck Pond light up for the season. The official lighting brings local entertainment and free hot chocolate, and the lights stay on through early January for evening strolls.
For something truly magical, head to Merry & Bright at Memorial University’s Botanical Garden. Thousands of twinkling lights transform the garden into a winter wonderland, with hot chocolate, a bonfire, and local choirs on select nights. Tickets are sold online for timed entry.

The Mummers Festival celebrates one of Newfoundland’s oldest holiday customs with free workshops and events, all leading up to the Mummers Parade. Pull on your mismatched disguise and join the fun.
For a quieter moment, slow down with a festive tea at the Georgestown Inn & The Edwardian Tea Room, set in a restored Edwardian home on Bonaventure Avenue.

The celebrations don’t stop at Christmas. On New Year’s Eve, families gather at Quidi Vidi Lake for an early evening countdown and fireworks, making it easy to celebrate with little ones. As midnight nears, downtown comes alive on George Street with live music, DJs, and a midnight pyrotechnics show over the city skyline.
However you spend it, Christmas in the St. John’s region has a way of making everyone feel at home.
