It is not a coincidence that Mother’s Day weekend also falls on when lobster and snow crab season begins. These decadent and luxurious crustaceans are just the tip of the iceberg to celebrating the special women in your life. Treat your mom to a delicious day (or evening) in downtown St. John’s filled with the freshest ingredients, of both land and sea, that our province has to offer.

1 Lobster for Breakfast! - image

Lobster for Breakfast!

Some people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, we like to think it’s also one of the most delicious. For a decadent start head to Blue on Water for their Mother’s Day Brunch. Fit with the popular Lobster Eggs Benedict, this dish sounds “deceptively simple, but bursts with flavours not found in your average neighbourhood restaurant”. At Blue on Water you are guaranteed to enjoy both Newfoundland and International fare that showcases local ingredients whenever possible, and that includes freshly caught lobster.

What others had to say:
“Wow, it’s good to be back! I’ve been gone since 2012, but the quality of the food is as good as I remember it! I had the mussels to start and they were monstrously beautiful. The Duck BLT and ceaser salad was a cut above. The folks are great, the drinks are full and the food is awesome.”

2 A Taste of the Traditional - image

A Taste of the Traditional

If you’re up for a time, Bridie Molloy’s Traditional Irish Pub is a staple and on Mother’s Day they are sure to bring a touch of nostalgia. With live Newfoundland Irish music and elevated pub fare, stopping by on Mother’s Day will be a hit with the most important women in your life. Offering a special Mother’s Day menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you can stop in anytime. At lunch snack on their Moose Tacos, which are braised in chilli spices and topped with partridgeberry pickles or keep with the berries and enjoy their dinner dessert of Newfoundland Berry cheesecake which is a rich and creamy cake topped with local berries.

What others had to say:
“Great food. I had the moose burger and my boyfriend had the steak and chips. Bartender was a doll and ended up providing our table service as well. He was very nice and friendly. There was live music. Didn’t just play classic jigs and the like, but a good variety of music. Folk songs, Springsteen, and more. I was steady singing. So glad we ended up here.”

3 Felling Crabby? - image

Felling Crabby?

If claws and seeing red isn’t what you normally think of on Mother’s Day, The Merchant Tavern may change your mind on that. With seasonal favourites like the Crab Bisque with pulled snow crab, fennel and sour cream or their Snow Crab Benedict, they take the term “feeling crabby” to a happy and mouthwatering place. Known for using fresh ingredients from local purveyors and some inspiration, The Merchant tavern create dishes that will make you feel sated.Their standards of fresh, wild, local and sustainable is a direct link to how the embrace Newfoundland both by sea and land.

What others had to say:
“One of the best restaurants I have ever been to! The atmosphere and dining room are perfect. The drinks are great and the food was delicious. There’s definitely a reason this restaurant is on Canada’s Top 100 List!”

4 On The Half Shell - image

On The Half Shell

A local favourite, Adelaide Oyster House has over 300 reviews on google and still maintains a 4.5 star rating. If those numbers don’t speak for themselves trying their Mexican Street Corn will. Of course they are known for their incredibly fresh oysters, and if you are new to the half shell let them know and they will treat you and your mom extra special. Their hot menu is a variety of asian inspired dishes including their pork belly rice bowl that melts in your mouth and will add a bit of bite to your tastebuds. Be prepared for more of a casual and fun evening filled with music, conversation and even a little bit of dancing.

What others had to say:
“Love this place. It is loud, and louder as the night goes on, but it’s casual and fun and welcoming. The food is all small plates that change up and provide variety enough for everyone. I love to work our way through the menu, sharing everything and taking our time. One of my fave food experiences in the city.”
