Fall is when the region’s makers shine. The markets are lively, the shelves are stocked, and there’s something handmade waiting for everyone on your list.

The St. John’s Farmers’ Market on Freshwater Road is a community hub in every sense. Each Saturday it brings together dozens of vendors, with local food, crafts, jewelry, clothing, and gifts. Come hungry, browse slowly, and chat with the people who made what you’re buying.

Each October, The Glacier in Mount Pearl transforms into one of the province’s largest craft and art festivals. Christmas at the Glacier brings together close to 200 craft producers and artists from across the country for five days of shopping, from October 21 to 25. For many locals, it’s the kickoff to the holiday season. Bring your list and check it twice.

The Craft Council Shop & Pantry carries work from more than 200 juried members, making it a go-to for fine craft made in Newfoundland and Labrador. On Water Street, Wild Things Gift Shop features work from Labrador carvers and local artists, from whalebone and caribou antler sculptures to handcrafted jewellery. Farther along Water Street, O’Brien’s Music stocks Newfoundland music, plus everything you need to make your own, including spoons, fiddles, accordions, and even ugly sticks.
The Tickle Trunk on Duckworth Street is a gift and souvenir shop with something for every taste. Up the hill, the Gift Shop at The Rooms offers carefully selected local products alongside exclusive lines.

Got a sweet tooth? The Newfoundland Chocolate Company has several locations around town. In Mount Pearl, JACOBEAN Craft Chocolate makes delicious chocolate from bean to bar.

Some of the most memorable purchases come with a conversation.
In Quidi Vidi Village, the Artisan Studios give emerging craftspeople a place to create and sell their work. Pop in, watch them at work, and take home something made steps from where you’re standing. Downtown, St. Michael’s Printshop is a working printmaking studio with the province’s largest collection of print works. For a scenic drive, head south to Tors Cove, where Running the Goat’s letterpress printshop offers handmade books, cards, and prints, with vintage presses still in use.
Every find carries a little of this place with it. So take your time, meet the makers, and bring a piece of the St. John’s region home.
