About the Colonial Building Provincial Historic Site

The Colonial Building was home to the Newfoundland and Labrador Legislative Assembly from 1850 until 1959. A gem of neoclassical architecture, the building’s grandeur is a testament to the optimism its builders felt about our future. Beautifully restored, this building is once again a gathering place for people to explore, contemplate, challenge, commemorate, and debate our story of governance.

Please join us for a guided tour of Colonial Building, where you will have the opportunity to view the building restoration including the lobby restored to the original 1850 finishes and both legislative chambers restored to their 1880 finishes, including the elaborate ceiling frescos. You will visit exhibits exploring the unique political history of the province and the history of political exclusion and inclusion. The temporary exhibits Speaking to Power and Making Our Voices Heard illustrate the power of art as a means for under-represented voices to comment on political decisions and for individuals from marginalized groups to assert their voices in public space.

Timed Entry

Due to capacity limits timed entry tickets are required for visitation at this time. The time of your ticket notes the time your tour of the site will begin. Please arrive a few minutes early to check in with front desk staff. All visitors will be guided through the site by Provincial Historic Site staff.

What to Expect during your visit

• Entry is by timed ticket only at this time.
• All visitors will be guided through the building by Provincial Historic Sites staff.
• The time of your ticket is the time your guided tour starts. Tours are 60 minutes long.
• Please be early and check in with front desk staff 10 minutes before your tour is scheduled to begin.
• The main entrance is located on the east side of the building facing Bannerman Road.

The Colonial Building Provincial Historic Site is located at the corner of Military Road and Bannerman Road. The main entrance is located on the east side of the building facing Bannerman Road.
