Film Screening of City Dreamers

In honour of World Town Planning Day, the City of St. John’s is hosting a free showing of City Dreamers, a film featuring Blanche Lemco van Ginkel and other pioneer female architects.

Blanche Lemco van Ginkel is an architect and city planner who made a significant contribution to our City. Blache, together with her husband, Sandy van Ginkel, created the Bowring Park Plan for the park’s expansion, which included the design of the Bowring Park Cantilever Bridge.

The van Ginkels brought on British engineer Ove Arup to complete the structural engineering work. Arup founded Arup Group Limited and is best known as the design engineer for the Sydney Opera House in Australia. The Bowring Park Plan and the creation of this unique cantilever is a great example of how planners, architects and engineers work together to create beautiful places in our communities.
