Pillow tops are woven with wool on wooden frames and were traditionally crafted by Newfoundland lumber camp workers to be gifted to their wives, girlfriends, or mothers. They are sewn onto pillows, or used as throws, pot holders, or place mats. While there are different methods of making these pillow tops, it always begins with a handmade square wooden frame. Today, Nicole Penney is one of a handful of people carrying on this tradition and provides detailed instructions during this hands-on workshop. She became interested in pillow tops several years ago while researching her grandfather’s time in the lumberwoods. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to walk away with their very own pillow top and the knowledge and skills to make more.

This 3-hour workshop will be held Monday, March 25th 5:30pm-8:30pm.

Nicole will provide the pillowtop frame. Participants are requested to bring their own yarn. Three medium sized balls of yarn in three different colours will be perfect!
