Roots, Rants and Roar festival consists of three events, Cod Wars, The Hike, and The Feast.
Cod Wars
They say history repeats itself and the story of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most sought-after commodity; the codfish is no different. The Cod Wars rage on, amidst the beautiful backdrop of Elliston’s Municipal Park local chefs duke it out to be crowned the KING or QUEEN of Cod.
Within the park, there are seven food stations operated by some of this provinces best chefs. Each station serves that chef’s best cod dish as they vie for the title. In addition to the chef’s stations, there is also a reception station serving an alcoholic beverage created with locally foraged berries, paired with food prepared by an eighth local chef. During the evening there are also two wine tasting stations and a cash bar.
From the time the gates open at 6:00 pm until the evening ends at 12:30 am local musicians entertain the crowd. During the night, participants will have an opportunity to vote for “King/Queen of the Cod”. The winner of the event will be called to the stage and presented with the award for the event.
The Hike
Saturday afternoon of RRR weekend features The Hike, a 5-kilometer loop along the Elliston shoreline. While hiking participants will discover five stations featuring dishes prepared by chefs from Canada and the United States, highlighting local Newfoundland ingredients. Each site also features local musicians perched on a picturesque landscape playing traditional Newfoundland music.
The Feast
Attendees are invited to sit back, relax and feast. The evening starts with an alcoholic beverage prepared with locally foraged ingredients. Elliston’s Municipal Park becomes the best restaurant in the province as local chefs prepare seven courses of local foods, served family style to your table. During the feast, guests will continue to enjoy local entertainment and premium wines.
