Tell Me How to Be Here is a series of text-based hooked rugs that consider the multitude of ways that language guides our relationships to our natural environments.

This work draws text from public signage and idioms recited by the artist’s grandmother. Tell Me How to Be Here also considers the potential for craft processes to act as political interventions and the establishment of craft as a vehicle for the matrilineal transfer of knowledge.

Ashley Hemmings is a visual artist and arts administrator currently based in St. John’s, NL. Their practice asks questions about the relationships between humans and the natural world and draws attention to the exponentially bizarre ways that land is regulated but not protected.
