You often hear newcomers say that they “fell in love with St. John’s”, and we must admit the town does have a certain charm to it. From the abundant coastal views to the quaint shops and the intricate alleyways, St. John’s can feel exotic and familiar all at the same time.

How does one make the most out of this romantic city on Valentines? Here are 6 ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in St. John’s (and area).

The secret hideaway

The Underbelly may not sound like a romantic place to visit but with its moody lighting and artfully crafted cocktails it is the perfect dark corner to grab a bite and snuggle up for some quiet one-on-one time. If the 14th just doesn’t work for you, The Underbelly, located in the lower level of Yellowbelly Brewery & Public House,  is offering their Valentines curated menu from February 10-17, extending the celebration all week long.

 A “Room” with a view

Maybe a casual date is more your speed, or the kids might be in tow? Why not take in a bit of culture at The Rooms museum.  The installations and art pieces provide a quiet place to reflect on the beauty that surrounds us. After an afternoon of strolling through the new exhibits, grab a coffee and some lunch at The Rooms Café and park yourselves in front of the wall of windows that overlook the harbour of St. John’s. This could also make a great solo or friends adventure if you are single this Valentine’s Day.

Let’s get physical

Pack up the skates for a few Loops around the Bannerman Park outdoor public skating rink. The infinity shaped loop is a subtle wink and the perfect spot to share some laughs and hold hands as you enjoy the great outdoors. Afterwards snuggle up and head over to Coffee Matters for a latte so you can continue your walk around the groomed trails at Bannerman Park.

A suite picnic

Let’s be honest, the month of February brings some unpredictable weather so why not have a “staycation” in your own hotel room at the romantic Murray Premises Hotel. Gather up all the pillows and blankets and make a cozy nest before hunkering down on some local fare such as:

Afternoon tea for two

A tea party for two! Champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, red velvet cheesecake and cinnamon heart sandwiches are just some of the decadence you can expect at Rose Manor Inn on February 14th. Be sure to call ahead to book your reservation for the afternoon, or maybe even give yourself a long weekend and book an overnight stay.

A stroll around town

Take the afternoon to tour St. John’s and pickup some last minute surprises. Boutique shops like Whink,  feature art, jewellery, decor, and more, a perfect gift for your valentine. In the evening relax and take a quick stroll to one of The 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in Canada, EVOO. Their Mediterranean dishes include delicious fire baked pizzas and a full vegan menu should your date be inclined.
